Hi All,
So I have had my e430 for well over a year now. ever since I have owned it i have notice that red SOS button near the sunroof controls.
Now i understand that it is an emergency button that i press in case if anything happens. What will happen if I press it and I don't have the cell phone service set up in my car?
I don't want to be traveling down I95 and all of a sudden three emergency vehicles are on my tail wondering where the crash is.
Thanks

Hey, it's in your owners manual. It's like GM's OnStar but you have to be subscribed for it to work. I think you've been watching/listening to too many ads. No county agency is going to roll a bunch of paramedics just because someone pressed a button in their car.

From what I understand it doesn't work anymore because they used an analog signal, and now Mercedes only supports digital.

i think its a pointless and irrevelent feature if it can not be used if you didnt pay for it. an emergency is an emergency and theres no reason to have to pay for it to work. now if u use it while you arent paying for it and you get charged extra thats a little more understandable. but its pretty stupid for mbusa to stop supporting the analog SOS system cause im sure theres alot of mercedes and w210's that are driven everyday that have the analog sos feature

Actually, there was still one analog holdout you could use with the fancy car phone I have in my console. I think it may be Verizon. Some crazy per minute rates though.

Last day for analog wireless in US was Monday, Feb. 18, 2008. Even the first digital wireless protocol TDMA was shut down same day.
But you're right. The tele-coms kept raising the rates until it made no sense to stay with analog.

If it's an old analog phone it's pretty much worthless. Unless it has GPS it's illeagal to activate it. The old Motorola 60S had Analog/Digital though but I don't know if that's the phone used by Mercedes.

I recently sold my Becker 1692 and CD changer to a guy who was restoring a SL600. I gave him the dash part of the phone for free. He didn't care it wouldn't work -- for looks only. Handset was missing by the time I got the car.

Interesting. I have a prewired 2002 E430 with the V60 cradle in place and voice command. I also have 2 "retired" V60S phones. Are you saying I can plug in and use the phones if I have them activated? I'm still on Verizon so that's only $10/month extra. Does the 2002 Mercedes system support the digital signal or do I need that "dual sense" thingamagiggy?

The phone has to be a Mercedes V60s phone with the proprietary MB firmware installed, though. If it's just an ordinary Motorola V60s, it won't work in your car. Look for the MB logo in the screen when the phone powers up. If yours isnt a MB phone, look out for one on ebay. I've seen them go for as little as $10 used. There's a guy selling new ones there for $175 and the MB dealer price is much higher than that. Search "Mercedes V60s" on ebay.
There's a great sticky thread on this in the audio/telematics section. Here's the link.

Good luck,

Thanks - I'll check behind the liner once we get a break in the weather. Heading into another storm tomorrow. My guess is that the car had a V60 installed at one time so I'm optimistic. As far as the phones that I own, they are regular Verizon phones, not MB phones so I'll start searching Ebay. Chicago is a hands free only city so this would be a nice addition to the car.
