Width of my AMG wheels?

Stock '97 AMG wheels that came with my E420 Sport. I know they are 17" wheels, but what is the width? Right now it has 235/45-17 tires on it...and I am wondering if 255/40-17 tires will fit ok?
thanks!

The stock sport package wheels on the 97 E420 are 17X7.5 et35 all around. You will need 17X8.5 et30 to go 255/40/17 in back.

255/40/17 will not fit but 245/40/17 should be OK. That's what I plan to do next time too. Currently, mine is 235/45/17.

If you are going to use 245/40/17 do so all around. The 245/40/17 is shorter. Tire height:

235/45/17 - 25.3"
245/40/17 - 24.7"
245/45/17 - 25.7"
255/40/17 - 25.0

Fender Rolling is recommended for 245 up front.

Yokohama list their AVS ES100 in size 245/40/17 as only fitting 8.0 - 9.5 widths:

Michelin list their Pilot Sport AS in size 245/40/17 as only fitting 8.0 - 9.0 widths

E55 KEV,
Thanks. You're expert on that. I do know the 245/40/17 is lower (shorter) than 235/45/17 but not excatly the number. Great, that will low my car about 1 inch. Thanks

The 245/40/17 should be very close to 245/35/18.
