Rough Running after MAF Clean

Question Rough Running after MAF Clean

Well I think I screwed up good this time.

Replaced the timing cover seal over the weekend. Once I was done I decided to clean the MAF. Not having the sercurity torx I just did my best to spray the CRC MAF cleaner in both ends and let dry.

Well I had issues getting the car to start. Once it did start the idle was rough and then the CEL came on. mis cyl 1 and 3 and random mis-fire codes.

I'm assuming I screwed up the MAF as all plugs seem to be firing fine.

HELP.....

Looks like you will be replacing the MAF. Should have left it alone. MAF's are not made to be cleaned. They are throw aways. Cleaning is a band aid that sometimes ruins a perfectly good MAF. They are quite delicate.

Don't you think it would be related to the replacement of the timing cover seal? The MAF shouldn't create any misfiring and related faults. If it's broken your engine will pull like an old ***, it will not misfire..

Try unplugging your MAF and you will quickly see if that is the reason. If you still have issues the MAF is fine. Only thing that will happen without the MAF connected is that the engine will go into limp mode.

You can't hurt the maf

if you just spray it with crc cleaner.Saying a maf is not meant to be cleaned is like saying spark plugs need not be changed.
You got the fluid into the intake,either let it run at idle till it smooths out or disconnect the battery and let the ecu reset itself.If the engine was running rough and after a few minutes settled down to normal idle and your only after affect is the cel,the battery disconnect will clear it or to avoid having to resync all you windows and steering wheel angle sensor and throttle position sensor,just get A $49 obd2 94169 scanner from harborfreight tools and erase the codes.
crc cleaner is meant for mafs,mafs can be cleaned if you do it properly by removing the insert.Security torx bits are sold at most auto parts stores for about 7bucks a set.use them next time.
diy maf cleaning is on benzworld.org w210 section.

So is it running fine now?

I did remove the sensor body from the engine and sprayed the MAF cleaner in both ends of the sensor assembly.

I'll try to dis=connect the battery after work and see what happens.

Better

and more through to remove the insert from the maf body.And be sure not to touch it with anything but the spray.Try the reset and make sure you plug connectors are all pressed on properly if you had them off during the gasket fix.
