Multifunction Display

Just received my owners manual for my '98' E430.
Manual shows that I should be able to access the consoles display to retrieve various information via buttons on the steering wheel. There are no buttons on the steering wheel? There are buttons on the dash: Left side has three buttons +, -, 0 and Right side has H, M, R. I am assuming the book was written for a latter version? What can I access with these buttons? The buttons on the Right appear to control the clock, but what can I do with the buttons on the Left? So, far I can only reset the trip meter by pushing the 0, but can not access any menus or perform any other functions with these buttons. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try pressing the odometer 0 button a few times rapidly; I think that will bring up the miles remaining until next scheduled service.

I think also you can do other stuff too by holding down the + or - button with the key in various positions (why the system isn't more logical i don't know!) like setting a speed limiter etc

You can set the brightness of the display with the + and - buttons. The book sounds like it is for a 2000+ model with the multifunction steering wheel airbag.

This is the wheel and airbag you would need.

Buttons didn't appear on the steering wheel on the W210 till 2000 model year (in the United States).

This coincides with the minor facelift this model received during this time.

Agree - quite a weird set up, and I'd never bothered with trying the other functions except setting the clock and resetting my trip meter. But can you really set the speed limiter using those buttons? What's wrong with using the cruise control shift to do that?

It's a permanent limiter (like the factory lkimit of 150mph). If you use the cruise control then you'll have to set it everytime you start the car I imagine and you'll get the limit data on the screen. The permanent limiter is good in case you forget and you get the normal display.

I put it on soon after getting the car after I scared myself trying the car out. I put my foot down and before I knew it was doing 135mph. I realised that with my driving style I could significantly speed without realising. I don't want to lose my licence yet! So I've set to a limit where I can brake quickly to below a licence losing limit if I see those blue lights...

Here's a sensible motorist without a doubt . However, I think for some it takes a away the thrill..........personally, I like to keep my $$$$ for the car
