Just an observation, on my 01 Wagon, I noticed that the shield has duct work molded in to direct the cool incoming air to the 4Matic transfer case.
I have had other cars in the past that I left the shield off, but after seeing how much engineering was put into this one, if it were to be damaged, I would replace.
Not sure if I would rush to the dealer to get one though, maybe a salvage yard or online auction?

The main belly pan behind the bumper is listing for $107 and the second pan covering the oil pan area is $39 plus the four attaching screws and body nuts for the second pan at $1 each. Just bought new replacements today at the dealership. Drain the oil from the top with a mityvac and never a problem. It does keep the engine bay cleaner.

Wow, that's cheap $39 , that steel carter protection plate only (code481 undershield) , has cost me around 300 euro's.

The code 481 is an option for a skid plate, but they are just talking about the regular engine drip cover underneath. Some believe it has magical cooling properties, but it's mostly for smoothing the airflow under the car.

I have a used extra front undershield with some scrapes on it for $50 bucks for anyone who needs one. Rubber edge is in excellent shape and pan has not been ripped off of car. Never is salt environment. The six mounting nuts are included. PM me if interested.
