Transmission misbehaving...
'97 e320 with 240k, trans has about 135k.
For the last several thousand miles, the transmission will bounce around in 5th gear (and 4th, but only when I leave it in "4") at speeds between 35-50mph. It's as if the torque converter keeps locking & unlocking itself. This will not happen at any speed if left in "3" and never happens if outside the speed range specified above. Transmission works/shifts perfectly under all other operating conditions.
Any ideas? Would resetting the transmission's memory help at all or am I looking at the beginning of the end for transmission #2?

Dont know. But its worth a try to do the reset. I did the reset in E420 the other day, 175K on tranny, and it did wonders. BUT I didnt have the overdrive issue thing you describe................
Good luck.

If hes referring to the relearn process,
make sure youre car is already been warmed up to temp
turn the key to the "on" position (right before the starting position)
hold down on the gas pedal for 5 seconds atleast
turn the key to off position but dont pull out or open any doors etc
wait two minutes, and then start the car
drive the way you drive or use the detailed instructions on benzworld.org and when I say drive dont just drive around the block drive around for a bit (over 10 minutes) preferably not all in the city so that the tranny can adapt well

yeah i have the same car as you but sport and once in a while on the highway after i slow down and speed up it will kick into 4th and stay there. had my mechanic check it out (freebie) and he told me to reset the trans and it was because it was so used to my city driving (i drive hard haha)
