1997 E420 Valvetrain tick
Hello folks......new to the board here. I've got a 97 E420 with 64,000 miles. I bought it in 2001 with only 9k miles. This is a perfect unmolested vehicle. Anyway, unfortunately, I went well beyond the recomended oil change interval one time, and now I have an intermittent valvetrain tick. It sounds like what a single bad lifter would sound like (I know this car is overhead cam), and its pretty loud. TICK TICK TICK. I took it on a 200 mile round trip over the weekend, and the sound went away, but now its reappeared. I've been told that it can be several different things. I am not super familiar with the MB V-8's, but I am very mechanically capable. I own a body shop, and I just got done building a new stroker Cleveland motor for my Detomaso Pantera. Any help that you people on the board can give would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps this is a known/common problem with these cars?
