Catalytic converter replacement
My car is out-of-warranty (63kmiles, 2001)...
The usual peeble, rattling noise on both cats..
Dealer costs is $850.00 for each, $90.00 installation for each at the local muffler shop.
I am looking for aftermarket unit but not able to find one that is legal in California.
I have read other threads that a defective cat unit can be cut off and rewelded with a new one.
Could some one let me know where I could purchase two cat units....

Find a muffler shop you trust (call them first). They will cut out the cat (I'm assuming it's your second cat, not primary). They'll try to use a Sawza, burn the blade out, and then use a cutting torch. They will have a "universal" cat they can put in there. They'll have trouble fitting them both, but will eventually get them in there. Should be fine. If the Cali Cops ask, it's legal to replace them if they go bad.
P.S. - probably only one is bad. They'll want to replace both. If they swear they're both bad, grab them when they come out, and point out that only one rattles. Also, the used cats are worth money, so grab them before you leave. Or arrange for them to cut you a discount to keep them. About $25 is normal per cat (they contain platinum, and metal is very expensive these days).

It's not specifically certified, but most welder won't care.
It is LEV compliant CA and for vehicles all the way to up huge escalades, and
Hummers, even in CA up to 2003.
I've just been researching this myself.
119 is a very good price, and much less than getting it from the
muffler guy.

09 you may be under the wire or the dealer if talked into it nicely(since they charge it back to the parent company may let it slide even if you are over.)

or oe cats about 60 bucks at eastern cat or racepages.com and except in ca. a muffler shop not midas will splice them in for about 50 bucks.
