Help with gear selector

My friend just purchased a 97 E320 on the past weekend and it goes into P-R-N-D with no problems and drove it 1000 km with out a hiccup. The problem is the actual gear selector won't physically move into 4-3-2-1. What do you guys think is the problem? Anyone have this before?

Shift module

or shifter bushing is not allowing the change over from one mode to the other.
Check the shifter bushing first. If it won't disengage the trans won't go into electronic mode.
If it's not the bushing the module is bad('water damage in most cases)
I can get used warrantied units shipped cheap and easy diy to install.

Do you have a pic of the bushing? the shifter is hard, it physically won't move over from D to 4
