strange deceleration

So I was test driving a 2002 e320 wagon the other day, and it did something I'm not sure is normal.

From a stop, I stomped on the gas and kept it floored until the car was almost ready to shift. I then let off the gas quickly. Normally, I would expect the auto trans to quickly upshift after I let off the gas. But instead, this car remained in the lower gear, and slowed down quickly under compression braking.

The transmission was in DRIVE. Conditions were normal (dry, mid-day, ~80F, flat paved road.)

Is it at all possible in any circumstance that this could be an expected and proper behavior, or is this a sign that the transmission has a problem.

I couldn't get it to reproduce this behavior, which to me was even more concerning.

What was it?

I had similar experience recently with my 97 E420. Very hot day with AC cranked and I pulled out quickly into traffic and stomped it .... it felt like I had my foot on the brake and the car pretty much stopped in its tracks. I hit the emergency flashers to keep from getting hit and quickly turned off the ignition and restarted. Shifted back into drive and off I went. Don't want that to happen again.

I think what you're describing is not similar to what I had. I hit the gas, to the floor, and the car accelerated just fine. I then let OFF the gas (completely & quickly - lifted my foot quickly away from the gas pedal) and the car remained in low gear. Normally, if you do this in most automatic trans cars, the transmission will immediately shift to a higher gear, the rpms will drop appropriately, and the car will sort of "coast" in the higher gear. Instead, this car stayed in the low gear when I let OFF the gas, and thus is slowed down quickly under engine compression braking.

Does anyone have any idea if this is normal or not?

I think the adaptive transmission was waiting for you to come out of the curve apex and punch it again......

THAT's what I was thinking, but I didn't know if the w210 e320 had this capability.

So, can anyone elaborate on when/how/why the adaptive transmission might act like this? How might I intentionally reproduce this behavior? Does it have to be in sport mode, or will it do this in standard automatic, too?

Thanks for the brainstorm...
