How do the outside mirror covers come off?

recalling from memory... fold mirror towards back exposing the internals, then you should see a thin (paper clip looking) wire. that is the catch, just pry it up a little while pulling off cover toward back. hope this helps...

Thanks, I don't have the car with me now, but I will check it out later. More recently, I can recall the gap formed when the mirror housing/cover is pushed backwards.

Can these covers simply be replaced by blinking covers from 2000+ e class??

Where do you connect the LED wires??

no 96-99 covers are slightly different from 2000+ mirror covers. and the connectors are different.
