Well, your second link appears to be the engine air filter and the first link is the cabin air filters.

There are 3 kinds of filters

Per above your cars engine needs to breath clean air so it gets an air filter.
The occupants like to breath fresh air so you have cabin filters(diy to remove and replace on www.benzworld.org w210 diy section)
and as an adjunct to the cabin filters you have activated carbon filters that will when demanded or manually turned on with the climate control, filter out noxious foul odors.(diy also on www.benzworld.org w210 section.)

Speaking of climate control, anybody have a guide with pictures that tells me what each button does? I just got the car recently and didn't get a manual with it and can't find one online. I don't know what half the buttons do.

crack of the mbusa site. It is in the diy stickies at the top of the w210 forum on www.benzworld.org
You can open and save a pdf file of owners manuals and service manuals from 2000 up on most models of Mercedes.

The activated carbon filter comes on via a sensor when you enter high pollution areas` ie. city smog,a bus, etc.
or if you hit the button on the climate control that turns it on.
The filters get changed per the service schedule you will fing by reading the service manual I directed you towards. The reason I'm not telling you what button is in the hope that you will read through those manuals and learn far far more about your ride than just what the climate control button does.
