Exhaust question

My car has 96k miles currently and since I got it 2k miles ago there's been a rattling coming from the muffler. The dealer said it was the cat convertors but when you hold the muffler still the noise stops. Is this just a hanger holding the muffler in place that broke?

The rattling noise is heard on cold starts, especially when brakes are applied like at a stoplight so its kind of embarrassing, also gets loud during acceleration when hot/cold. Loud in Park too. What should I do?

If you have access to a lift you might try tapping around with a rubber mallet looking for the source of the rattle. I just had a cat replaced and it had a very distintive rattle that I've never heard before. Something like marbles in a can but not as loud. Not at all like a rattle caused by a loose bracket.

One thing that might have happened is a piece of the cat substrate has broken off and lodged in your resonator.

If it turns out to be the cats, how would straight pipes sound?

Damn, really? What can I do for exhaust mods? I want a nice noise and to get rid of this rattling.

My state doesn't have inspections on vehicles, so how would they know?

If you remove the secondary cats

You need to replace with resonators like Aero and install an H-pipe
To balance out exhaust pulses and prevent it from sounding like a motor boat.
Or you can splice in Magnaflow universal cats, or high flow cats.
Info in the diy section on www.benzworld.org

Ok, a little update for you guys. The past week it's been extremely cold here in NE (-5 to 20 F) and the muffler stopped rattling... This is confusing me. Its not making any noise at all, now its silent.

Whats the deal?

If there a 4 CATS the 2 closet to the manifold are bad. Can I replace them with universal CATS or at least CATS that wont cost me an arm and a leg.. instead of spending well over $800 on new CATS for 1 side and then having to still pay for installation. What CATS are out there that are resonable in price?

You

can bolt on complete unit both cats and pipe all stainless steel for under 500bucks a side.
Or splice in universal front cats
part number for the correct one is most likely listed on the w210 forum in the diy portion under exhaust.
