Ticking, clocking sound from the front of...

...my w210 E230 1996
What is that sound that makes my car sound almost like a diesel engine?

It comes from underneath this black cover...
It sounds more when the engine is cold, but also remains after its warm, but not as strong...

Anybody know whats causing this and if something needs to be done?

how bad is the ticking? can you make a good quality video lke another member did?
that location points to the timinig chain. have you had recently any type of work done on the engine, like resealing timing cover or the headgasket. i suggest you have an experienced mb mechanic listen to it, it's very difficult to diagnose noises through the internet. maybe timing chain is stretched. maybe you need a new chain guide/rail. have an experienced mechanic, could be nothing or something serious.

Hmm, its like its knocking on a metal shield behind it, gets better when its warm but comes unevenly....
Sounds like that pre igniton when diesel engines are cold, hard knocking sound, you know it?

No recent work on the engine in that area, been like that for the past 40 000 km

take a look at this link http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w202...ound-help.html it is about a c230 but it's same engine as yours (m111). listen to the video, does it sound like yours? in that link changing chain guides/rails is proposed as a solution, read carefully post 12 on page 2. seems like this is pretty common on m111 engines, and i have heard it before that the m111 (4 cylinder) engines were louder than m104 & m112 (6 cylinder). keep us updated and good luck.

also you might want to post the same question on w202 forums, since there are more w202 members with same engine (m111) as yours than here in the w210 forums. seems like this is common with m111 so they have to be more knowledgeable on the matter.

Tirona,
Thanks, this seems to be the closest description and probably the causing of the sound...
Ill read the thread throughout, but at least it doesnt appear to be any critical problem

Thanks again!

Chris

Located the sound, its the fan wheel damper, that rod has some rubber gaskets around the bolts, they have gone hard and therefore makes the rattling sound, got to get a new one, or, fill in the gap with tape around the bolt or something...
