Just aquired a 2002 wagon...

Whats up guys its a 2002 e320 4matic, PPI was great but have a couple questions.
When driving over rough roads, bumps or pot holes I hear some rattling coming from rear of car, type of sound that a loose spare tire would make or something along those lines. My mechanic couldnt figure it out either. He said everything is in place inside and outside of car. Is this normal for a wagon?
Second, temperature and clock are distorted on instrument cluster, easy fix?
Im going to guess its not.
Please advise.

thanks, leo

congrats on the purchase - not a wagon owner, so I can't provide much on that front. Hopefully ohlord will chime in, he's got a great wagon and a ton of knowledge to boot...

regarding the pixilation - common on the 210's. My 00 E320 had it and it's starting on my 01 E430. The fix can be easy, depending on how you look at it. Links for DIY's on our forum [https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...-cluster.html] or at benzworld [http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w208...play-fix.html] have some fixes that have been proven - just takes a little effort and bravery to DIY.

other than that, some indy shops are skilled at it or you could pony up the grand or so to a dealer since they don't sell the unit separately. But do check out the forums - lots of knowledge to be had.

happy benzing

I have heard but yet to experience on my wagon, noise coming from catalytic converter or resonator. Again, only heard that those "unfindable" under carriage rattles are usually the cats. My 190e has this issue and because it passes smog I can live with it!

Some people experience a rattle when the interior sunroof cover is open. It can rattle in it's tracks. It hasn't happened to me so I don't know how loud it is. The spare is held in place by one centrally located screw so it can move up and down even when it feels tight. You might try placing a folded rag/towel under the tire and see it the sound is muffled or goes away. Of course if you're storing any tools (tool kit, etc) in the spare tire well, wrap them in a towel and wedge them in place. I am assuming your mechanic carefully checked all the hangers on the exhaust system.

Good luck.

Cats are unlikely because you'd hear them rattle on smooth streets too but the easy test is to tap them with a rubber mallet to be sure. I think Richard's answer is closer to the truth. Rule out anything loose like he stated. My money is a metal hanger on the exhaust system.

Car free at the moment
I've owned a 210 wagon for 5+ years now. In my experience, the carpeted trim panel on the inside of the tailgate is a noisemaker. It's something of a creaky sounding noise.

YES! I think thats it, or the 3rd row when closed makes the noise.
