Odd High Pitch Sound

My 98 E320 at times has a high pitch squeal coming from the engine compartment. Its not brake related and does not get lower or louder with acceleration. However it does cease at idle. I dont have any codes showing (for once!). Any ideas.?<!-- google_ad_section_end --> <!-- / message -->

Is your neighbor's cat missing? Sorry couldn't resist.

Have you ever used a mechanics stethoscope? They're pretty cheap (Pepboys, Autozone, etc.) and can be handy finding sounds that quiet down at idle. If you have/get one, check the power shafts on the various accessories such as PS, A/C compressor, alternator, idler pulley and belt tensioner for eureka moment.
