Shatter Window
Hi All,
I got hit with the common window problem of the E320's. My son lowered the left rear window but it wouldn't come back up. My wife raised it by hand but as soon as she started driving, the window slammed back down and shattered.
So, I read up on how to fix the problem if the window was still there. My question is where would I get a replacement rear window? What would that cost be? and is it still a repair I can do myself or is it better to take it to the dealership for repair?
Thanks

it's been a few months since i was inside the door. seems that the window
was a relatively easy unit. metal bottom edge, which sits in channel and
had a little nylon fitting which locks it into place onto the regulator. a no
brainer. you should be able to do this easily. would suggest wearing shop
gloves as there are metal edges waiting to snag your skin.
OEM for matching window and tint. or aftermarket if you already have tint
and can get it tinted to match the others.

Hi Raymond,
Thanks for that info. Just asked the dealer what it would cost to do the glass and regulator, they said $334 for the regulator and labor. They glass would be an additional $134 and that he believes the glass is riveted to the regulator. Do you remember it being riveted?

the regulator is riveted to the metalwork of the door. from memory, there
are only about 5-6 rivets. you simply drill them out and punch them into
the door.
you use a short length of wood, e.g. a yard stake, or 2x4x12" and hold the
window up.
you reach in and remove a small metal clip which secures the bottom edge
of the window to the 'slider' on the window regulator. twist and maneuver
the articulated regulator unit out (if replacing)
the window is *not* riveted to the regulator.
read this DIY write up and see if it helps. R&R of the rear window regulator
is easily do-able in 30-45 mins @ methodical, careful pace.

I decided to take a look inside the door last night, to my surprise the glass is intact. The white piece that holds the glass had broken so the window just dropped. So, I'm going to get a regulator from the dealership and see if I can get it back together tonight.

that square 1x1.5" nylon piece is what fractures most of the time. a weak
spot. it can be fixed for <$10 but will take some labor. so if speed is
paramount, just order the regulator arm (which includes the nylon piece)
and install the regulator. pretty easy. i settled for aftermarket regulator
for about $45. figured if the MB one is so prone to failure, no need for me
to "buy Mercedes" as if it was quality n all.

Raymond, Yeah I'm kinda pressed since my wife wants to drive it this weekend. I got the regulator from the dealership at lunch. I took the door apart last night so when i get home I'll try to get this job done in less than and hour. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your help.

UPDATE
Well I fixed the window problem. I replaced the regulator with one from the dealership. With all the help from the forum it took me about 1 1\2 hours to complete from start to finish. I screwed up an tore the moisture barrier of thinking it wasn't needed. I stuck it back the best way I could but it can't be functional.
Thanks to everyone who help me with this project.
Now i'll try to figure out why my steering wheel is making noise.
