Help installing AVIC-U310BT in '00 E430 plz...

Help installing AVIC-U310BT in '00 E430 plz...
Just bought the wifey a 2000 E430 which has the single din becker radio with phone. The phone is obsolete (startac) and before I spend $200+ on the updated bluetooth puck and whatnot, I can buy a Pioneer AVIC u310BT with bluetooth and navigation for around $265 (ebay).
I'd much rather go this route, but I can't find ANYTHING about intalling a double din head unit in this single din car! I'm sure there's new wood radio bezel? and probably more to it - but I can't find ANY info. It's late, I'm tired and need a little help!
If anyone HAS installed a DOUBLE DIN unit in a SINGLE DIN E430 - pictures, details, etc would be very appreciated!
Or if you guys/gals can recomend a single din alternative to the pioneer avic?

One method is to cut the bracket and wood between the headunit and HVAC controls, which will then give you a double DIN slot. You then move the HVAC controls down below the headunit into the blank space.
The other options is to buy or make a new bezel and get the double bracket, which will let you mount it like it was stock.
There are lots of good single DIN units to consider, as well, both flip out and standard. If you're looking to go the easy way, this is definitely it. Also consider if you want steering wheel controls.

The steering wheel controls and intergration is why I wanted to go AVIC. I had read it seemlessly intergrates with MBenz steering wheel control (with proper adapter of course)
And a quick search thru ebay shows that 310 model for around $270, which seems like a GREAT deal until I started pricing the wooden trim piece! I've seen them as high as $400+ JUST FOR THE WOODEN TRIM!
I absolutely need input on whats the best way to proceed. I think a single din unit with flip up screen will block the ac controls... so if for whatever reason I can not go with a double din unit, it looks like I might be forced in to a single din with no flip up screen...

Yes, flip up will block the AC controls. You can swap the AC control and headunit, but then the flip up will block the AC vents.
Do you need Nav? If not, you should be able to find single DIN units that integrate to the steering wheel the same as the AVIC.
If you find a local stereo shop, sometimes they can make you a proper trim piece for cheaper than you can buy one.
