How to R & R bezel and shifter?

Dumped a bit of drink on shifter bezel area, now in limp mode.
Can anyone give me an idea how to remove cover/bezel, and shifter knob?
Is there a chance I could clean out or dry the shifter and have it resume working? Unhooked battery and installed new 7 year battery, no change. Located a used shifter for $25.00
I have had the car since new, no problems except it went into limp home mode about 7 years ago at about 40K mi., after driving about 10 miles toward home on the back roads with Emerg. flashers on, 30 mph, I think in low gear, it shifted up and I drove the remaining 10 miles home at normal speeds of 50 to 60 in 4th and 5th gears.
I took it to the dealer the next day, they found no codes, they checked battery and said it was good.
I told them to install a new battery anyway because the original battery was still in the car and and 7 years old.
They put in a new battery and I have had no problems till now, a few hours after a small spill on the shifter bezel and slide area.
Mileage is now about 114,700, car is black/black and like new condtion other wise. No check engine light on.
Any help at all would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
Don

Thank you for the very timely and pertinent reply. I had looked for days for the info that you sent right away. I had been very spoiled having nearly perfect cars since buying the 97 E320 new and a 2000 E320 new, but love both cars and will now try to learn to work on them. I had worked on my Jeeps and 56 Chevy Belair for years,
but was afraid to start on the Mercedes for fear of screwing up more than I was fixing up.
Thanks again,
Don
