Dashboard Backlights??
I'm starting to lose my dashboard backlights on my 2001 E320. Can they be replaced and if so, how? The backlight behind the gas gauge and the light behind the clock have recently gone out. Any suggestions?

get a set of cluster hooks. Insert them. Pull the cluster. Remove the offending bulbs.
Replace them with non offending ones.Done.

Try the search function on this forum. I posted the same question a while back, and got a much better - and more detailed response. Apparently there are several small bulbs behind the instrument cluster that cost about $8 apiece. Removal of the instrument cluster would appear to be the hard part - requiring special tools and a delicate touch. It was further recommended to replace all of the bulbs (3), because once one goes, the others probably won't be far behind.

There are probably 10 or 12 bulbs on the back of the cluster. The one behind the clock is a mini bulb with a tan base. The one behind the fuel guage is different.
It is important for any DIYer to know how to remove the cluster. Extend the steering wheel out and down as far as possible. Insert the cluster hooks between the cluster and the fake wood and go in about 1.5". Work the hooks down between the vinyl and the cluster to near the widest part of the cluster. Turn the hook toward the cluster and pull slowly but firmly. The cluster should come out. Leave it plugged in, but look for the bulbs on the back.
