I'll do the transfer tomorrow, which will usher in a new phase of diesel ownership, but it isn't completely new. There are quite a few 603 parts that are identical to 606 parts in the aftermarket world. Since I had just purchased several new parts (water pump, fan clutch and thermostat) for my 603, I was pleased that they will also fit the later engine.

Three or four years ago, I determined I would switch to diesel on everything, so I added a W124 to the 6.2 L 3/4 ton Chevrolet I already had. That was almost a perfect match for the 4 diesel tractors I have. I toyed with the idea of biodiesel, but living as far from town as I do, the vegetable oil feed stock presented a problem. I changed that thought to just using waste motor oil that I filter through a 25 micron sock and finish filtering through a 1 micron sock. I mix vegetable oil, hydraulic fluid, old gasoline and anything else that will burn with about 50% ORD (off road diesel) to bring the viscosity down and it works without a problem in the tractors. ORD is about $2.50/gallon, so that 50/50 mix halves the cost of operation.

I mow my front yard with a 40 hp tractor w/5' bush hog and just use a gasoline zero turn for "trim" work.

I had thought about a diesel Mule, but opted for gasoline due to parts costs.

Maybe next time I'll go with a diesel Mule too.

I picked the car up today and was a little perplexed by the radiator fan not turning. With a careful eye on the temperature gauge, I drove the 18 miles to the house (temp only got to 80 C with the A/C on). Then we chose a convenient tree and hooked a chain hoist to the tree and the radiator support and straightened it out, which unjammed the fan blades. Apparently, someone had run over a curb and bent the support and didn't notice the fan wasn't turning anymore. Probably it was due to short runs and colder weather (inspection sticker ran out in January) that no damage was done.

Not too hi-tech, but it was effective.

I've had air cooled 1600 cc Volkswagen buses with more power than I experienced with the 606.
