1998 w210 e320 fan clutch removal

I give up, I've been searching for someone that has removed their fan clutch without the "special tools" on a w210 e320. I did find a great writeup with pics on peach parts http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...d.php?t=158069 site, but the guy had a diesel and everything including his fan clutch was different than on the e320. So I probably do have an 8mm hex bolt dead center holding the fan clutch to the water pump--just like him-- but there is a thin copper strip covering it on mine. I'm sure it does something important like telling the fan to hook up when it's hot so...

I really just want all the crap out of my way so I can replace the steering hydraulic pump along with its pressure hose. I want the GD fan/shroud out of there! Unscrewed the fan blades from the clutch and still can't get the shroud out.

Help me ob1kenobe, do I HAVE to buy the special tools, this is my sisters car I don't care that much!

You have to buy the special tools. I had to replace a radiator and believe me, I went through every tool in my toolbox before I went ahead and bought the tools. The problem is, there are 2 wrenches....one to hold the fan/clutch, and one to turn the nut. The one to turn the nut is so thin. That is why you need the special tools.....there's so little room, the wrenches are very thin.

You have the M112 engine (correct?) so your fan comes off similar to my E430 (M113 engine).

Here's the tools you need:

I know you're right

thanks I did manage to squeeze the shroud out once the fan blades were removed, but I don't recommend it, the shroud on this car was on its way out anyway, plastic had kind of distorted and was hitting fan, it did come out intact however.

It was a timeline thing I couldn't wait another week to get the wrenches, thanks for your post!

You can rent them for free at advanceauto, autozone, etc. You pay for the tool, use it, bring it back, they give you a refund. It is a special program they all have.

If you don't bring it back, it is yours to keep.
