"Display Defective", What the ......?

Our '97 E 300 D is talking to the wife again. She said it briefly said Display Defective, on the multifunction display. The next time she started the car the message was gone, and it has not reapeared. All of the bulbs for the warning lights seem to light up, and we even have all our pixels working on the temp., time, and odometer. There is a bulb burned out behind the tack. but this has been gone for months. I would like to know what kinds of failures would cause the display defective message? Since the message is gone, do I assume correctly that the problem has also gone away for now?
