removing rear cat?
Hi. My 2001 W210 has 140,000. The exhasust (Remus) has been making marbles in a tin can sounds for several months and I finally went in to a muffler place... the right rear cat is completely broken.
I can replace it with an aftermarket cat for abouyt $300, or just rip it out and replace with straight pipe. Uf I just rip it out, (cost of $30)
1. Is this legal?
2. will it still pass a CA smog test... I have one coming up in November
3. If I take out this rear right cat, but leave in the rear left cat, will it imbalance the exahaust and hurt the engine?
Thanks!

I have a similar problem on my '01 E430 wagon - my left rear cat is rattling. I was thinking of removing the left and right rear cats and replacing them with straight pipes but share your concerns regarding any adverse effects (triggering CEL for instance) or it making it too noisy - although I dont mind turning up the v8 soundtrack a little bit!

2000 W210,Silver on black, slightly lowered,82k miles,simple and clean.
California Air Resource Board (C.A.R.B)
I wouldn't think you would get a C.E.L. by removing the rear cats since the o2 sensor would be reading the exhaust before them, but really don't know for sure..
And as far as legality in CA is concerned it would NOT be legal, you cannot remove any emissions related parts legally here. I know that even if you replace the cats with an after market brand they need to have a C.A.R.B. approved number on them for legal use in CA. I recently got turned away trying to smog check my '95 F-150 because i didn't have the sticker with the C.A.R.B. number for the headers, even though the headers were actually "smog legal" JBA's with all the stock ports and connections...but with that said you can "smog" almost anything if you find the right place and pay enough $$ Just don't get caught 'cause it can turn into an expensive nightmare pretty quickly from what i've heard
