trans dip stick

Does any one have information on the length and measurements on the transmission dip stick for a 98 E320?

Attempting to make my own!

I was thinking of using an electrician's snake wire for the dip stick and using a file to make the marks on the dip stick for high and low markings but I need the measurements from the top of the stick from the fill tube ?

I tried something similar to this. It didn't work. I finally bought one off eBay (search 722.6 dipstick). Also, Oh Lord on this forum sells them. So does Amazon.

See post #6 here to measure your own.

just waiting for the espresso machine to fuzz out my latte so i took some pics

the Lowes hardware store gadget is just for comparison. both mic-ed to .25".
surprisingly, the flex was close but the snake was stiffer.

given the slight price diff, not sure why I'd want to go Lowes.

The length of the Mercedes dip stick is longer than necessary, at least for my car. They all are to be inserted until they hit the bottom of the pan. Using Raymond's close up of the tip, the two marks near the metal portion are the low and high marks when the oil is at running temp.

The transmission oil must be 80+C. Don't go by the coolant gauge in the instrument cluster. If you don't have a way to measure it then drive the car for 30 mins. This is why you need to measure the amount you take out and put the same amount back in. That way the level will be close enough so that you can drive the car before the final check.

Be sure to park the car on level ground before checking the level.

When the temp of the transmission fluid is at 80C+ the final level should be in the top band of the dipstick tool. The correct dipstick tool is marked '80 C' at that point. The graduations in the middle of the tool are used to determine how much add. IIRC, each mark is 0.1 liters.
