Mercedes E320
Question Center console part for 2001 E320???

Good Morning!
This is my 1st day here and 1st post. Although I have looked at the forums before and it appears to be a helpful place to exchange info.
So, Mr. was getting in the car one morning after I had been driving it and had the seat set so I could reach the pedals in combination w/his hands being full and being in a rush he SPILLED COFFEE DOWN THE CENTER CONSOLE throwing the whole shifting system so out of whack it can no longer be driven!
We have tried suggestions about taking apart and drying as far as we could bare before thinking we were going to break it more. So we've come to the point of looking for the best price on part#2102670524 and then having someone install it who knows what their doing.
If anyone has any suggestions or advice for me Please feel free to give it, I'll keep searching for solutions until Mr. breaks down and has it towed to the dealership or something!? Thanks sooo much in advance for replies!!

I've read about this accident occurring to several W210 owners. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

I wonder if it would help to insert a piece of plastic film (like a painters drop cloth) underneath the console with necessary holes cut as small as possible so that spilled liquid would run away from the sensitive electronics. This wouldn't do anything to save your window switches, but could it save the more costly parts?

Don't drink in the car. Especially drinks with open or easily removable lids, like coffee.

If you have to drink in the car, a sealed container like a sippy cup, screw top coffee thermos, or squirt water bottle are much safer.

I tried to tell my wife that once. She said that if that was the case, she wanted a different car.

I agree, a sealed container is the simplest solution. I like the idea of redundant safety measures, though.

Yeah be careful!

It's just the cup holder part. If you have a can of something, that fits in the can only holder AFTER I have taken a big gulp. In the event of an erratic swerve, I can save the car and shifter. Think about that next time a friendly driver cuts you off. A. $.87 super duper fountain drink can cost you. Where will your drink be?

You can pull the arm rest from the back seat and pull out the cup holders from there. You can grab your drink at a stop light. That's when I buy my super duper.

I think I understand about 40% of this post. The rest is incoherent.

Here's the Cliff's Notes:

Put your drink in the back seat drink holder and you wont spill on your shifter.

Those "cup holders" are more useless than the front ones. I have a special smooth sided "fatty" cup with a spring sealing screw top that fits in the front cup holder really well. It is fat enough to depress the spring arms almost completely so there is very little wiggle when I am cornering around a highway jug handle and the smooth sides ensures I don't catch it on the spring arms while I am pulling it out.

It's the only drink holder I bring in my car other than small water bottles, which fit in the door pocket.

I posted the problem once in a different forum, and one member asked if there was a way to put a cover on the shifter mechanism... If there is a way to encase the shifter under the trim, in such a way that the spill would just go straight to the carpet.

No such chance to cover it up.
It will run down the shifter and short the electronics. The part used (shifter assembly sold as one unit) is about 170$ from Potomac German Auto.
It is 4 screws to remove and disconnect the cable then a pin underneath that is easy to remove.
Don't spend 500 large for this part new.
Remember to disconnect power from the battery before removal/reinstall or you will fry it again.
It is about a 30 minute job for the inexperienced.
