Limp Mode Problem

Okay guys be easy with me because I am new here please lol I have a 1999 Mercedes Benz E320 with around 70k miles on it. About 6 months ago the car suddenly went into limp mode. My family owns a used car lot so me and my father tried to figure the problem out but couldn't so to be honest its just kinda be sitting out back at the lot but I want to get this fixed. I have read alot of problems like this but what I don't understand is that mine randomly goes in and out of limp mode. I can sometimes hope in and drive it for 2 weeks with no problems then WHAM there it is again. Other times its not a couple of hours till it kicks in. I plan on using our detailed scanner to scan the transmission itself tomorrow so i do not get the basic transmission code. But i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what this may be!? Any hepl is much obliged!!! Thanks guys

Couple ideas

Fluid may be present in the transmission control module due to faulty transmission adapter. You would have a leak.

Conductor plate on its way out.

You could be overfilled or underfilled. Not sure if that would trigger limp though.

You are on the right track. Get the transmission error codes and post back.

I had a limp home problem with a W211 that turned out to be a faulty accelerator sensor. It would go into limp home mode if I floored it but would reset by turning off the engine and restarting it.

Yeah sometimes you can turn the car on and off and it resets and other times it doesn't do it so i don't know. I tried to scan it earlier and my scanner wouldn't read. Said to check the fuses and everything so i did and everything checked out okay so now i gotta figure out how to scan it.

The OBD II scanners most of us have only work on a small subset of generic codes related to the emission control equipment.

The car is trying to protect it's transmission which is the purpose of the 'limp home' mode. A restart just clears the computer memory but the fault (problem) causes the transmission to go back to limp home mode.

As suggested you need to have someone usually a dealer with a SDS scan the car for the transmission codes. No point in wasting money on well intentioned suggestions. Find out what's wrong and go from there.

We have 2 detailed scanners which can specifically scan things such as engine, tanny, airbag, etc. And you actually have to go into the year, make, and model of the specific car and it will tell you if it does not support the specific car. I got another scanner im gonna try tomorrow and go from there
