P0455 Frustration

I purchased a 98 E320 Wagon with the check engine light on. OBD code then was a bad pass cat and oxygen sensor. Replaced the cat and sensor and it got rid of that code. The code now is P0455. Had noticed the fuel light would flash when it would get to 3/4s of a tank full for a while. Replaced the gas cap (just in case) with one from the dealer and cleaned the fuel tank vent (aka Regeneration, MOT, purge valve). Check it intermittently and its clicking away sometimes, other times not but starts in about a minute. Cleared the code and drove it 70 miles. At that point (with just over a 3/4s of a tank of fuel), I heard a beep then the low fuel light began flashing and the check engine light came on again. OBD showed P0455 again. Cleared it once more and drove it about 100 miles w/o letting the fuel go lower than 7/8ths of a tank. Took it to pass emission test and scan showed it was not ready. Now have driven 258 miles since I cleared the check engine and it has not come back on, but I have not let it get lower than 7/8ths of a tank full.

Any ideas? Don't know if the valve I mentioned above is supposed to go on and off, or is supposed to be ticking constantly.

P.S. After having let the battery drain by leaving my lights on, the car would have a smell of gas in the cabin for a while when I would start the car cold, but that is no longer the case.
