Raspy Muffler

So, I have my first "real" problem with my w210. Its a 99 AWD. The problem is everytime you accelerate, I have a raspy tinny sound from the exhaust (It sounds like a loose heat sheild).

Lifted it last night and had my girl give it light gas on and off. It appears to be coming from the center muffler. I know it isn't the cats, as they were replaced not to long ago according to my service records.

My questions is, Has anyone experienced this before? If so, how much can I expect to spend on a new center muffler? I know from the cats back is about $470.....

Any information is good information!

Thanks!

Alright, I need a new rear muffler section. Baffles are coming apart. can someone recommend where to find cheap replacements?

Shouldn't be. Look at the recent threads and you'll find several with 200 views and no replies. Sometimes it's a rare problem that most of us have never heard of so we're waiting to see if anyone has an answer. Sometimes the OP defines the problem in such strict terms that only allow for one answer so no advice is needed (or wanted?).

I believe you have 4 cats. Have they all been replaced recently? Your problem sounds like loose media in a catalytic converter. If it breaks up fine enough it may move downstream and settle in the muffler. It's a common problem in higher mileage W210's especially with MAF or O2 sensor issues. The cost of replacing the muffler depends a lot on OEM vs aftermarket and dealer vs. muffler shop install. If the cats were replaced locally you might try going to them and ask for an inspection.

It doesn't have to be the cats, it could be a loose resonator or baffles in a muffler like the OP said. Since he hears it from from the muffler, it's probably the muffler.

OP, it sounds like you had someone look at the car already so I won't advise on that, but I will say that for the price of an OEM rear section, you could probably end up with a nice aftermarket exhaust. If you're interested in exploring that avenue, check out this portion of our website:

If you'd rather stick to OEM-spec parts, we can help with that as well.

Thanks rich! I had a local check it out. Said it was the rear section. Cat back. I just don't want to get raped. The indy quoted me 1600 for the cat back. Seems alittle high. You know of anywhere online that I can get the parts?

Oh lord, will this be as quiet as a factory muffler? I'm a 35 yr old executive, i'm not looking for that coffee can exhaust sound. I like the quiet ride.
