Installing CD Changer in 2000 E320

Hello everyone I just joined today as I my E320 just arrived today so this is my first post here. My sister owns a 2001 model as it has the CD changer in it and also the heated seats buttons on the dashboard.

Anyways, I looked in the trunk driver's side and did not find a CD changer so I was wondering if I could buy one off ebay and install it myself. My dad has a S430 but his CD changer doesn't work. (Says no CDs loaded). Is it possible to take his and put it in my E320? The CD changers look very similar to each other.

Hello and welcome to the forum -

There was a change about MY2000 from wire to fiber optic. Make sure you get the correct one as they are incompatible.

MB changers in the trunk can be unreliable and you have to stop and change the CDs on a long trip. I think a better alternative is to add an AUX-IN cable routed to the glove box. Then use an MP3 player. Just my $0.02. There is a sticky in the Audio/Electronics forum regarding the options.

Are there instructions on how to do the AUX cable option? And about how difficult is it to do?

It depends a little bit on the radio. Generally, the back of the radio has three DIN connectors. One for the radio controls, power etc, one for the speakers and one for the input from the CD changer. You need the data pinout for the CD changer connector. Once you connect a cable to them with a 2.5mm jack connector on the other end just select CD on the radio, plug the cable into the MP3 player and your player with play thru the radio.

There are other less DIY intensity options. If you have a Becker radio, Becker North America will exchange your radio for one with the cable or install a cable in yours for a fee. Alpine may have a similar plan. If you have an older model with a tape deck you can buy an adapter but the sound quality isn't as good. The link that I mentioned has some of the options.

Of course, a lot of people just purchase an after market radio (head unit) with an AUX-IN connector built in. That may be the cheapest but the radios tend to be a bit gaudy unless you like metallic purples.

My pre-owned 2001 E320 did not have a CD changer. What I did was to buy one on ebay, bought a mounting bracket from a dealer, and they installed everything for free.

Thanks for the ideas and help! I think I'll just be looking for an after market head unit like Richard suggested since my friend says he can install it for me.

OK, so you said you have to stop and change the CDs....does this mean that even tho there is a 6 disc CD player installed, it won't change CDs on it's own? That's what I'm finding but thought I was dense about how to change them. Thanks

Mine didn't have a truck-mounted CD changer when purchased new, but was fiber optic.

Richard98 is the best advisor. Well I had to replace my Becker HU altogether with a Pioneer HU I had sitting in my garage for years. I had to buy Pioneer CD-RB 10 for auxillary adapter. Google it and you ll get it cheap on ebay. It works well with all portable devices.
