98 E320 shift knob will not go into down shift to lower gears
My shifter goes to the drive position but will not let me down shift to manually go to the first, second and third gear selection.
Any advice on where to start looking to remedy this problem and how to remove the shifter to make a repair is much appreciated.
I am wondering if anything may have fallen into the shifter counsel to stop the down shift?.

You might have droped something in there if you have no cover for the shifter channel , i had the same problem ones and i pulled qurters out of there . but mine was only not going in the first gear . you may have something bigger in there or just in the worst spot . try inserting a magnet probe in there if it is something made of metal you will now it's just a matter of pulling it out or try to see with a flash light , other wise check underneath. good luck
