W210 Reliability - M104 Vs M112

Hi guys,

Can someone comment on the reliability of the W210?
And in comparison to a Japanese car (lets for arguments sake assume that a similarly priced Japanese car will never fail).

And, how do the M104 and M112 engines compare?
I drove my dads E240 when it was new in 2001 and it was a nice, smooth drive, but it was a new car.
And fuel economy between I6 and V6, and different engine sizes?

Off-topic but I couldn't resist!!!

My company car is a Toyota Avensis 2.2 D4D (Diesel)
Always carefully driven warm (like my W210), mostly making highway KM's on cruise control in 6th gear (manual)

80k fuel pump failure, towed
100k headgasket fails, could make it to dealer pooring regular water in
125k headgasket fails again, towed, new cylinder head, new turbo, new water pump, new DPF
150k turbo fails, broke off at it's shaft, engine oil made it's way in to DPF, new turbo, new DPF
175k engine keeps starting badly and running rough, after 3 weeks at the dealer and trying new injectors, new glowplug etc. it turns out the compression in cylinder #4 is doubtfull, brand new engine and clutch installed!!!
at 186k now and waiting...

The Diesel E is closing in on 300k and only had a waterpump and one injector seal so far...
