My 2002 E320 4-Matic Wagon has developed a pretty pronounced engine clatter. It gets worse when I let off the accelerator. It seems to be coming from the middle of the car below the front seats. Last fill-up, I cheated with high gas prices and put 87 octane in. Could this be the problem? Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Does the noise begin at start up while in either P or N or does the noise just begin when in D while either accelerating/deaccelerating??

It happens when it's idling as well, not just in P or R.

I would then follow your thoughts and put the car on a lift to locate the noise!!
