Verify your door check.
Mine was broken when I bought the car, and I also noticed same problem on some of the clients cars. The Door Check is held in place by three little bolts(2 on the outside and one behind the door trim), that third bolt is the problem it gets loose and can fall out causing the Door Check to fail.
Verify if your door check feels loose, or the door frame around the opening seems bent, if it is the case remove the trim panel, then depending on how bad it is you can either:
simply tighten the bolt(adding a little threadlock or a locking washer would be recommended);
remove the door check assembly, then remove the sleeve and straighten the two "ears" where the bolts were screwed in, then straighten the door if necessary;
replace the door check if "ears" are cracked or broken off, and repair thrye door if necessary.
That's about it.
