Radiator R&R

I am going to replace the radiator on my E430. Was reading the DIY article and have a question. The DIY states that I need to read the temperature of the transmission fluid to check the proper level. I do not have anything past common handtools and was wondering if this is critical. I was going to guesstimate the amount of fluid loss and put as close to that as I could and let it go. But now I am not sure . What do you think? Any other ways to do ?

Do you have the dipstick?

If its measuring OK now at operating temp, then estimating the amount lost and replacing that is a good starting point. Then check again at temp and top off as necessary.

It's very critical but ...

If you have the 'dipstick' tool you only need to replace approximately what was loss (don't over fill). Then drive the car for 20-30min to get the transmission up to operating temp and set final level at 80 degree band (top). I recommend using the correct 5 sp MB fluid since that's probably what is in it now.

Done ! took about 2 hours. Lost about 1/2 pint of fluid. Drove car and rechecked level and filled to 85 degree level. No leaks anyplace . I am proud of me.
