That's good to know, since I personally have only had the staggered. I thought I'd perhaps have better traction because there's more tire contact with the road, does that sound reasonable?

New E, I'd learnt its more than just the traction. Compared to the standard wheels, the staggered setup has has a different offset, spreading the rear wheels futher apart, lowering the centre of gravity and of course widens the stance which adds to cornering stability. What width tires are u using? 235 fronts, 265 rears?

They're 245/40/18 front and 275/35/18 rear. I asked them to put on what you listed, 235 & 265, but when I picked up the car they said the tire shop recommended the other (and just put them on). I haven't had problems with clearance or rubbing, which I thought might happen.

Feathered tires
Not to bring it back to a boring standard MXV4 question...
but I have noticed the outter corners of my tires are not worn any more than the rest of the tire, but they're feathered. What does that mean? Is that camber or caster that is off? Or is that typical as well? I guess I just need to rotate again?

That sounds like it explains why I don't think the car accelerates that well, and why the steering doesn't feel that responsive. I like the added stability of the 4Matic, but it's never seemed all that fun a car to drive. I try to remind myself that my particular model and how it's outfitted should probably be driven as more of a luxury cruiser as opposed to a sports-oriented one. We have a 2002 530i in the family as well, and the personalities of both cars are very different.

When your tires "feather" further, try the 235 - 265 combo, you'll get much better steering response and pickup. I actually had 225's for a while in the front and turning response was great, without looking too whimpy.
Stock, BMW's are always more responsive on a standing start because Benz's have a torque delay to stop you and your passengers from getting a whiplash. As I've said before, its a completely different driving style with the Benz and you'll find gradual is more effective than a straight flooring if you wanna good start at the lights.
