2000 E55’s ABS & ESP lights come on when I step on the brakes

Hi all,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
My 2000 E55’s ABS & ESP lights come on when I step on the brakes. The last time it happened was 2 years ago and cost me ~2100+ to replace the rotors/pads (it was at a certified MB shop). I would like to save a few bucks this time around and request some advice from the forum. I use my car for regular commute (8 miles each way) I don’t race/abuse, drive or brake hard, I practically drive it like it were a mini-van.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
1) Is it normal that the brakes wear out every 2 years? And is it normal to shell out over 2 grand each time?<o:p></o:p>
2) Is the replacement so complicated that a regular auto-shop can’t do it? <o:p></o:p>
3) With other cars usually a pad replacement would cure it, perhaps with some resurfacing of the rotors. Do you think this will cut it for the E55?<o:p></o:p>
4) How do I know if all 4 rotors+pads need to be changed or if it is just the front/rear?<o:p></o:p>
5) What quality alternatives to OEM brake parts are there and where can I buy them?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Thanks for your help,<o:p></o:p>

Replace your brake light switch under the brake pedal mate. no more than this.. abs/esp lights comes up when the switch go bad

when you need pads you would see a message in the board, "Visit workshop pad wear", but never comes up the abs/esp light.

Just replace de brake switch 15-20$ range

oem discs in the e55 round 350$ each, pads round in 170$.. 2100$ for brakes is stupid..

try the W210 amg forum to got some other price/opinions mate

The warning indicators your experiencing is due to the brake switch under the dash. Brakes to be done every 2 years sounds about normal. This is a AMG E55 not a regular E430 or E320. E55 has AMG spec brakes and softer compound pads which in turn wear out quicker. Brakes are so expensive because its a AMG. Its got bigger rotors, bigger pads unlike a regular W210 E-class the rotors and pads are the same used on all non-AMG W210 cars which in turn makes maintenance items such as brakes cheaper!

As mentioned, AMG brakes are high performance and thus parts are more expensive.

There are specs for minimum thickness of pads and rotors. If you drive conservatively, you should get 2-3 pad changes before replacing the front rotors. Rear rotors and pads last longer. Look for a shop (MB trained mechanic) that understands and won't gouge you.

Here is some service manual info. Applies to W210.072 with Code 957 (AMG) Confirm that your car has that code installed!

Front pads - floating caliper
New pad w/backing plate - 20.5mm
Service limit* - 15.5mm

Front discs
New - 28mm
Service Limit* - 25.4mm

Rear discs
New - 22mm
Service Limit* - 19.4mm

You can check to see if discs are stock by measuring the thickness at the outer edge and comparing with the new values.

* Service limit - This is the absolute minimum. If while servicing the brakes either the pads or the rotors would exceed the minimum before the next service then replace at that time.
