Headlight problems

Hi all, I drive a Mercedes-Benz e280 1996.

I've only had the car for a few months. And I have ran into some problems, most of them fixed by myself but there is one I cant seem to fix.

If we imagine the image below is my car all lights except 1 of the middle ones work. If I then activate full light, or what ever its called, you know when all headlights are turned on to give the best light, if I put that on the one light works, but when in normal driving light the 2 big xenon ones light up and 1 of the middle ones, but 1 stay dark until full light is turned on! I tried switching the lights to the same effect.... Boggles my mind! And ofc theres the lampe defect message going on on the HUD!

In normal driving with your lights dipped, only the outside pair light up. When you want full beam all lights should be on.

i have several questions to help wrap my head around this:
  • who installed your headlights?
  • can you confirm that they are indeed HIDs...or are you just using 'xenon' generically?
  • how long did this bulb malfunction warning begin?
  • when you describe the lights, be specific in describing which bulbs are on/off:
W5W bulbs are the small ones which sit higher in the inner oval
H7 bubs are the larger ones which are in the center (lower than W5W)

To clarify first abit, the car on the photo is not mine, I used a stock photo from google to show the headlight setup, in reality my car only have 4 lights as far as I know.

I am sure that the far left and right lamps are HID, the 2 middle ones are generic car lights. When the parking lights are turned on the 2 HID lights and the left middle light is on, when I turn on full light (still dont know what its called in english, in swedish its helljus) both HID's and both middle lights turn on.

According to another poster in this thread the middle light which is ON is the one thats defect, so I dont know.

the bulb holder and wiring leading to the smaller bulb (above the H7 high beam
bulb) is known to have premature failure. the holder and wiring disintegrates,
decomposes etc and weakens the integrity of the contacts....leading to failure.
so you may want to carefully examine the connection as well as using a volt
meter to check continuity
