I'm totally confused. Is there any reason why all the shops are telling me non-MB specific gearshift knobs won't fit our cars?
After taking the OEM knob off, all I see is the chrome shaft that's slightly flat on the top, apparently to stop the knob from rotating but if the non-OEM/non-MB affiliated knobs has a screw on the side to hold the knob in place, I can't see why I can't use them. Is it because no one makes them with the same or similar diameter holes?
Please, can anyone give me a logical explanation?

Thanks Benz. Comforting to know I'll have a choice beyond the standard AMG, Brabus, Carlssons........
Now, out to see if I can find something nice....and will not spin around.....

Veeerrry nice
- thanks!
That would match my black wood/ grey leather interior perfectly.
What brand is it and is it difficult to put in place (in particular, what stops the knob from spinning around)?
Many thanks again - you'd just made my day!

That jewelled one's a bit too much.
Very stylish and fits the merc like a glove. E55 Kev, they look like they're made especially for the Benz's - do these actually clip on like the original one?
Got a carbon/leather one today but it wasn't long enough to cover the bumps on the shaft
- will have to swap for another tomorrow. Also been checking out the Momo's, as with the other brands of knobs, looks like I'll need to ram in extra plastic washers (usually comes with the knob) right at the end of the hole to stop it from wobbling........

Actually it caught my eye on earlier threads but never got a chance to ask - they look so........original that I was wondering which option pack it came with. Very nice too
Do these come in the black birdseye maple too (or whatever its called!)?

Here's mine and like I said before, nothing too fancy but just plain nice to go with the wood, my Brabus wheel and chrome shift surround...Sorry about the dust and smudges but I haven't washed my car for a few days.

Many other cars non MBZ cars still use the button release on the shifter to engage I believe. Even BMW automatics have a button.
The one I have just slides on and the nut at the bottom tightens up to secure it. You can actually remove it by just by pulling it straight up.

Thanks again guys.
Speaking of shift boots/gators - has anyone thought about putting them on our cars?
I'm considering it to make mine look like the W211's but can't resolve the problem of covering the W/S button - anyone got some ideas? In any case, as I don't use the W/S buttons to often, I'm quite prepared to cover them anyways.

Finally got one to fit!
Momo "Shadow". Wouldn't have minded the "Tomahawk" (next pic) but that was short by about 1/2" to cover up the jagged parts of the shaft!

Thanks
The Tomahawk just reminds me of E55 Kev's only less stylish, more rugged.
Does the Shadow really cost $90+ in the US (saw it on the web)? I got mine for $61.50 only.
Matches my cell phone holder too
(sort of.....) Now I need to save up for the steering wheel - carbon or black birdseye maple/leather combo:o

like u once said, its a Benz and too much chrome, carbon etc. would ruin the MB style. However, I meant the carbon/leather combo (saw some Brabus ones) but I tend to agree with your choice
).
Do you think US$650 (installed) is too much for such a steering wheel (Shwartz)? If so, I'll wait till one of my business trips to the US or UK.

It really depends because it's hard to find the wheel you're looking for. My Brabus wheel retails at over $900 bucks but I got it used for less than half of that. I think that price is just about right if you want to go for it. Got any pics. of the wheel?

Correction: should be spelt "Schatz". Sorry dude - searched for one but can't find it but they have some nice and reasonably priced stuff on their site:
