Question W210 instrument cluster fuel gauge

Hi all, the fuel gauge in my W210 E320 cdi is malfunctioning. It stopped going back to empty when the key is turned off. And it is now pointing directly left at the temp gauge. When you turn the key off it seems to me as if the mechanism that turns the needle is slipping. I have removed the cluster from its housing and it works fine. And when i replaced it again and turned on the key it went to the correct fuel level position (i.e. full) but refuses to go back to empty when the key is turned off. Has anyone had the same issue? If so, is there an easy fix? Thanks for reading.
