01 e320 4mat tans fluid service

car has 278K miles wish to exchange trans fluid today by drain and drop pan and refill -no flush. questions on how much fluid to add initally and also I did buy tran dip stick but noticed there is no collar or "stop point" at
the top so you just push it in all the way until it hits bottom? I guess im more accustomed to an oil dipstick. I only have 8 liters of trans fluid so I plan on purchasing more for another change in the future. I realize Im only diluting dirty fluid not doing a complete exchange but I have access only today to a friend and lift. My concern is not to overfill initally but also to not run the transmission with far too little fluid. Anyone have experience?

assuming you have the right amount of fluid in it now just measure what you take out and put the same amount back in. When I did mine I just pushed the dipstick til it hit the bottom. Make sure you measure the level with the transmission warm.

If you dont have a torque converter drain plug you will only use half of the fluid you already have. It holds a total of anywhere between 7 and 9+ L pending which version of 722.6 you have. Your owners manual ought to contain the info.

The dip stick is designed to be read when bottomed out; fluid should be at 80C and the level should be at the top of the 80C range on the dip stick. Practice inserting it a few times and then mark it with a sharpie or a clamp at the top of the dip stick tube for reference.

If you don't insert a new lock pin your trans tube cap "will" vibrate off.....

trans drain

Thanks to everyone for advise as you can see I can use the help; an air filter plugs and oil changes are the extent of my experiences and this is a new car for me. Rob suggests a cooling line drain as more appropriate and I will investigate that. Im currently trying to find torque values for the
new gasket replacing the pan, the link I found will not open on my compter. Thanks again
