heated seats

1997 e320. if i switch on the heated seats, on both sides, the red lights only stay lit for a short period of time, like say under a minute. i dont feel tons of heat in either seat, but i thought at one point i felt some on my back. i guess my question is, should the lights be going out, or should they stay lit? is there some type of temperature sensor that wont allow them to work? i havent owned the car for very long, and really havent had much of a need for the heated seats other than to play with the fancy switches to see if they work.

Thanks!

2001 E320 RWD - Brilliant Silver/Ash: 100,000+
Mine never go out until I turn them off. They start with all red ones lit then after about 10 minutes they switch from high power (2 lights) to low (1 light). Mine might be different as I have the ventilated seats in addition and those 3 blue lights are below the heat indicators and on the same panel.
