2002 E320 transmission

how do I know if the transmission on my '02 E320 wagon is going bad or needs new fluid? I just bought the car and I feel like I have to accelerate too much to get the car moving, though once I get moving, I'm fine.

Try the switchmon the shifter in S first. W gives a second gear start.

A fool proof answer to your question is get the transmission module scanned by MB diagnostic software. Request a printout!!

However the test is like a balance sheet------only good(represents) for the moment in time it was generated. Good Luck

Thank you all for your helpful responses. I will have my local mechanic do a transmission drain and change filter and gasket tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed that changing the fluid won't harm the transmission. I want to continue to enjoy driving but can't with all the issues I've been experiencing.

There's probably nothing wrong with your car.I have the same model...it's a very heavy car and somewhat underpowered.Ckeck your spark plugs and wires.
I always have my trans set to w...starts off in second gear...i find that the
acceleration is smoother.First gear take off is too sensitive and harsh.
