1996 Mercedes E300
New to forum
Hi everyone. I just bought a 96' E300 from my neighbor. He was the first owner and car looks in good condition, except for the paint, it is showing some age. It has 159k and I picked it up for $1800 believe it or not. Anyways I do not know to much about these cars as I am more of a classic car and Bmw enthusiast but I would like to learn more about them. My question is, is this car really this slow? Its not to bad, but I feel that when you step on it, it takes very long for it to respond, is that normal? Also when I accelerate more than half way on the gas, the glow plug light comes on until i stop accelerating hard, what can be the cause of that? Last question, when I'm driving between 40-50 mph, the car rocks back and forth and the rpms jump up and down, any ideas on that? I look forward to learning about these cars and meeting people.

The non turbos(E300) are dogs, however a great town car.
If it were my car I would have indy do a base line scan. The 95's are diagnosed very differently than the 99turbo therefore be cautious who diagnoses the car!! Good Luck

You'll learn not to pull out in front of people driving a 606.912. Once up to speed they are reasonably responsive.
You don't mention any CEL's.....your GP light may be voltage related or a bad connection/ground. Check the condition of the wiring harness, some early 96's suffered from deterioating wiring insulation. Might want to monitor voltage while driving using the CCU (key on, hold REST for 5 secs, use AUTO buttons to toggle to screen 24). After the GP relay clicks off (~2 mins after starting), voltage should be around 13V at idle and pushing 13.5V when accelarating.
The crossover flaps and EGR valve are typical causes of surging with your engine. Check vacuum lines and look for rotten rubber. After 16 years some of it will need replacing.
If you go the indy route you might want to pick someone different than the original owner used.....

"What you mean by "dog"?------that is slang for "slow to accelerate" or "won't get out of it's way" or "it's a pig" or any expression that implies "slow"
You now have some very cheap transportation that is seventeen years old.
I would not put a red cent into the car and I would drive it until the wheels fall off!!

Driving a merc is well an aquired art. Use the manual overide on the gearbox as you'll know when you want to accelarate about 7 seconds before the gearbox, and then when at speed just don't slow down for the corners, works for me.
