Rear Brake lights stay on while driving
I have E320 yr 2000 Sedan. When i start the car, the rear lights stay on all the time until i turn off the car. 6 months ago I replaced the brake light switch located under the dash. It can not be it. Can the relay cause the lights to stay on after start? Thanks

E300 TD W210. Yamaha fzs600 ,
Same issue
I had BAS etc lights recently. I changed the brake light switch and all seemed well..... for 5 hours ..... Then brake light fuse blew (inside drivers door hatch) and all warning lights came on . Blew 5 more fuses trying to find what problem was , removed brake lamp switch and refitted it and now all warnings are off but brake lights stay on ... Removed and refitted several times and same issue ,.. Brake lights just stay on , even if I remove the switch and turn ignition on the brake lights come on .. Think I may buy another switch

After fitting new brake lamp switch , all 3 brake lights stayed on
So after I changed my brake lamp switch all 3 brake lights stayed on but warning lights for BAS etc went away... I removed the switch and checked its resistance and found it to be operating correctly. So why were my stop lamps all lit up as soon as I turned the ignition on ?. So I measured the voltage across the larger of the switch connectors whilst ignition on and got minimal difference ..... So the in and out were both live ?? So they must be crossed !! Stripped the black fabric covering off the cables and started tracing them back and BINGO !! Wires were fused together , the black/purple wires had melted into each other.
So I split them apart and for a quick fix just insulated them with electrical tape until I get some new wire and shrink tube etc .
Reconnected the switch and pulled plunger fully out and fitted it back to pedal and all is working again .
Hope this helps someone else out .

I am yet to see the wiring melted at the brake lamp switch. That is indeed an odd scenario. We see this all the time on W215/W220 models - Brake lamps are on anytime the key is in position '2' - In STAR/Xentry, it's easy to check the operational status of the brake lamp switch. It is also easy to check the signal status of the Rear SAM. In almost every case, we replace the ESP/PML/BAS control unit and the problem is solved. Leave the key on for 15 minutes. The ESP/PML/BAs control unit will be hot to the touch with this type of failure...
