E230 electrical problems

Hello everyone! I am new to this forum and looking forward to learn a lot. Im live in cali and just recently moved back to philippines. Anyways, my dad gave me his 1996 w210 e230 elegance. Its in good conditon interior/exterior. But, the following does not work: pwr windows, pwr locks, sunroof, side mirrors, pwr seats (but the passenger side works) rear headrest, horn. All the lights ext/int works btw. I took the car to a shop yesterday and the mechanic told me based on his diagnosis that i need to change the control modules. I believe its the k40 and k5 modules. The price is quite expensive for these modules. Any ideas what else could be the problem?? The fuses are all good. But the mechanic did not check the relays or voltage even.

Ive been gone for over 13 yrs and i do not know any good/reputable shops yet here. Thanks guys.

Good morning,

Remember that if the mechanic was using the DAS Xentry diagnostic software he does not need to check the voltage because the software checks the voltage and displays the voltage on the screen.Checking voltage is old school!!

Secondly I doubt the K40 has anything to do with the plethora of issues with you car. The K40 is the starting module bla bla.

Rather than trying to wrestle the elephant----lets look to like systems and take a system at a time---lets look at power windows/locks-------are you able to open and close and lock with the inside switches??? Does you key fob have the features to do the same??

When was the last time you disconnected you battery, waited for five minutes and then reconnected the battery-----------then tried to use the systems.

Please advise.

Hello plutoe. Thanks for the reply. I have not disconnected the battery yet. The switch to lock the locks does not work either. The key fob does not work as well. I will try to disconnect the battery today. Not sure if this would work, but my dad told me that the battery was dischared and the car sat in the garage for almost 2 months.

Well if that is the case. The first thing you want to do is test the battery voltage---is there at least 11.5v----if not you may have found the problem, however how did you start the car and have the so called mechanic scan the modules---very confusing and may be you can restate your problem with ALL the information.

Don't spend any money on new parts until you isolate the bad ones. These systems are all connected via the CAN bus network, and a failure on one module can cause the others not to work. The central connector is under the door sill at the bottom of the a-pillar. You can disconnect one at a time, disconnect/reset the battery, and then drive around to see if the problem recurs. For me, the right rear window module was the gremlin, and I hear that's pretty common.
