"Cell phone noise" at Start-up on 2000+ cars; TeleAid?

Every morning, as I start my 2000 E430 4matic, I get a loud, intrusive tone through the speakers, which may or may not happen again during the day. A friend with a 2000 CLK320 also gets it and described it as a "cell phone noise". The dealer didn't know what I was talking about and someone at MBUSA said it was for the SOS TeleAid system but couldn't elaborate.

Does anyone know what this tone means and is it supposed to be intermittent? I find it rather annoying.

Thanks, Paul

It's only 2000 cars, not 2000+. Owners of MY2000 cars get greeted to the TeleAid "startup chime" ... lucky you!

p.s. I don't believe it comes through the speakers... it only comes through the "add on" TeleAid speaker, which on your friend's CLK320 is in the passenger side kick panel. This was used for TeleAid because it was previously used for the cellular phone systems, but beginning with MY1999 the phone systems were integrated with the stereo and speakers, thus the speaker was left alone. I believe in MY2001 the now also goes through the main speakers on some cars, but the other speaker was left as a backup. If you're not subscribing to TeleAid anymore, you can disconnect the speaker so you won't get the tone. There is a connector behind the kick panel that can be unhooked.

Thanks Scorchie for the first real explanation! Any idea where the speaker and connector are in a W210? Also, why is it intermittent?

Thanks, Paul

Try putting your seatbelt on before you put the key in and start the car. Its an obnoxious sound....

Putting on your seatbelt has nothing to do with it. It is intermittent because it only comes on if your car has been off for a certain amount of time. That's why you always get it on the first start of the day. I subscribe to TeleAid. How can I get this thing to shut up!!

Thanks Pagman for your suggestion...unfortunately, putting the seatbelt on before starting makes no difference.

Sorry...I don't get to drive the car as much as my wife does. It seemed to work for us.
