MB E430 small but annoying problems
I would like to start by apologizing for my bad english, Im from Sweden
I bought my first mercedes a few days ago (I had alot of Audis and VWs before) Its a 1998 E430 Elegance
I got it cheap so i wanted to try something new. I LOVE the car so far, the best car I ever had. The car was garaged for 5 months before i bought it so I have som small issues.
1. Headrest on the driver seat dosent work (read here on the forum that it could be the motor)
2. Cruise control works sometimes up to 55MPH but most of the time it dosent work. (read somwhere it could be that rear tires are bad balanced?) my own suspicion is that my speed gauge is kind of "shaking" all the time so the CC cant find the speed? (Limiter allways work)
3. When i use kickdown in speeds about 145MPH (high rpm) and when its supposed to change from 4-5 gear it cant change gears instead it just start (whats the expression?) lagging like somebody cut the power... otherwise the transmission is PERFECT.
4. My tail light has a small crack in it so i found other tail lights from a 2002 E class (the facelift) do they fit on my car?
I will get som pictures tomorow.
With kind regards SweV8

Out Of Control!!
Happy New Year,
I will answer the easy problem------that of intermittent CC, the CC is directed my your ECU and the ECU gets signals from engine RPM, speed sensors and break light switch to set or stop the desired speed. Therefore if the tires are different types or not at proper inflation you will get wrong speed sensor data and the CC will disengage. If you have a bad break light switch that will cause the CC to disengage. If you have a bad ECU the CC will not function as designed-----so what is it---that is why MB designed their DAS Xentry system so grease monkeys like me don't waste time and seattle sam the issues with wild guesses or "I think so" or "I remember when"-----The diagnostic tool tells me what is wrong------so my answer is get a quick scan with the DAS Xentry and you will know what is wrong with your CC rather than me guessing. Good Luck

Hej.
Your speedo should be rock solid, so a bouncing indication points to a potential problem with a wheel speed sensor. Check them out first.
Also, do you mean 145 kmh (90 mph or so)? Either way, have you checked for codes?
