e420 brake pads

The dash board indicator just came on saysing my brake pads are warn down. I replaced by front and rear brake pads (and front discs) ~15K miles ago and am not a "hard" driver.

Is it normal for brake pads to wear-out after ~15K miles? Could it just be the brake light indicator is malfunctioning?

I spoke to a repair shop specializing in Mercedes and was told that Mercedes always changes the shoes AND discs together in order to insure optimal braking performance. Is this correct or just a sales pitch to increase the costs?

If I need new front brake pads and rotors/discs, approximately how much should it cost?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance for the help!

Brakes

If your rotors are not warped and can still be turned then you don't need to replace them. If you have been in a lot of stop and go traffic, your pad would wear out faster. Some pads are softer than others and wear out quicker too. I think rotors are $55 each, sensors are $3 each and a set of pads are $45 but you might be able to find them cheeper. Try looking on www.importeccatalog.com .

Your pads should last longer than that. Check to make sure one of your sensors has not become disconnected. When I was installing my pads I noticed that it takes a very firm push to get the sensor connector to click and lock onto the sensor cable.

As for your rotors, if they are only 15K miles old and they are not vibrating, I would not do anything to the rotors. If they are vibrating I would replace them. It is almost as cheap as turning them, and the results will usually be better.

Thats right, if one of your sensors are not pushed in to the pad all of the way it could be touching the rotor too soon and giving you the indication.

The pad price...is that per wheel?

And how many sensors are involved? I'd like to do this myself next time (and save $300 on labor), but I have no idea how to replace sensors.

The pad price is for a set. It does both front brakes. The sensors just push in to the brake pad and plug in next to the caliper, one per side. Doing it yourself is no problem. I did mine and installed new rotors, pads, and sensors in front in about an hour.

Thanks for the info. Are any special tools required?

And are the rears any more difficult?

The rear brakes are even easier.

A spring clip with 2 pins hold the pads in. You knock the pins out and lift the clip and pull the pads out.

If you go to the tire/wheel forum, someone recently posted all tools and parts needed to do the front brake job. The only thing special that you may not have is the 7mm allen wrench. This is to remove the caliper pins. If you go to the AutoZone or Kragen Auto, you can pick one up for less than $5USD.

15Kmi sounds pretty fast to wear pads out, but at about 40Kmi, i found that my right front caliper was frozen, the inside pad wore out until it shorted the sensor, the outside pad still had 1/2 thickness. Make sure nothing is frozen.

My front pads wore out at 18,000 miles of mostly city driving. I replaced the front rotors at 27,000 miles.

hpilot - That very interesting, I've read other posts to indicate that the front pads on a W210 wore out before 20Kmi. When yours wore out, wear the pads worn down to the point wear the "brake lining" warniing came on?
