huh? i thought all MB owners had car lifts in their indy-theme garage? my bad.

yes, good point, plutoe. when i first changed my fog bulb, i drove it to the curb
edge and let the front bumper overhang the tall curb. this allowed me to lie in
the street and access the fog hatches better.

i've since graduated to a costco floor jack and multiple jack stands and a sheet
of cardboard. i'm in da big league now (in my neighborhood)

I did mine a few years ago with a set of ramps in my garage, pretty easy. I just used the new gasket and have not had any leaks so far.

If your transmission fluid breaks down and loses viscosity, your transmission will break do to lack of lubrication. If I were you, I would replace your fluid, no high pressure flush, just pan filter and torque converter. The only thing new fluid can and will do is protect your transmission...my .02

obviously the dealers provide this service. the link above establishes this as a
do-it-yourself activity. so clearly it is a task that can be covered between the
two extremes

Hard shifts are never a good sign. Did you try the tranny reset method? Sounds to me like you may have more issues going on here then dirty tranny fluid. You may want to save up and have the dealer run any tranny codes to see what really is going on. Also why the CAPs?

Pre 2000 model? I might have missed it! But if so, you have the torque converter drain plug, you're looking at under $200 for 9qts, pan filter, gasket and crush washer, torque converter crush washer, dipstick seal, lock and spout (cap)and a dipstick. Hit up autohausAZ.com for free shipping and best price!

The oil in the torque converter is oil that's pumped from the pan your draining, it goes from the pan to the torque converter, out to the trans cooler and back to the pan. So saying draining the torque converter will make your transmission fail is like saying draining half your engine oil will make your engine fail.

As you discovered; Fluid level is rather critical on this transmission.

Agreed. My MB dealer did a "flush" of transmission and torque converter on my 2002 E320. They discovered that they blew out the seals on the upper transmission seal around the transmission controller within 10k of this service. They claimed that the controller had to be replaced, though working fine, and charged me $6000 to fix transmission.

Just service by opening transmission and draining fluid, as well as changing filter.

Just completed my trans tune up today. Was easier than I thought, took only like 2 hours or less, draind 3 1/2 liters. Only remember seeing like 5 tiny specks of metal not bad I don't think for a transmission with 225000 miles that hasn't been serviced. Next time im going to do torque converter and pan It should be easy now that the filter is new. All I gotta do is drain and fill right??
